1. The Jealous Type

Filipino men tend to suggest marriage if they’ve been in the relationship long enough.

Rings are generally optional, but we tend to expect engagement rings from Western men, precisely because it's in their culture.

2. Talk to the parents after proposal

Being very family-oriented, after proposing to your Filipina girlfriend, I strongly suggest that you fly to the Philippines to meet her parents and make plans for the wedding with them. We call this “pamanhikan” in Tagalog and “pamalay” in Cebuano. Bring food with you and of course, some beer.

During your pamanhikan, reassure her parents that you’re going to take care of their daughter.

Like most Asian cultures, Philippine culture is rather conservative when it comes to public displays of affection. When I was still in the Philippines, it wasn't unusual to see May-December, Filipino-foreigner couples walking in the mall hand in hand. In most cases seeing such a couple would draw stares from other Filipinos.

If you're about to deal with Filipinos either because of your Filipina wife or fiancee or for something else, just know that Filipinos tend to put great emphasis on getting along with others. The word "pakikisama" is on top of the list of our "social vocabulary."

So where does this pakikisama extend to?

* Drinking sessions

Unless if you're allergic to alcohol like I am, do not turn down a drink offered to you at a party (if you don't want to get drunk, be firm about drinking only one glass.

* Videoke

Filipinos are pretty much like Japanese and Koreans in that they love to sing. So if you're asked to sing, just flip through the song menu and book the song's number on the videoke machine.

* Non-confrontation

Filipinos tend to dislike people who are too frank or brutally honest, and if there's a problem, they're non-confrontational about it. So if you have problems with a particular Filipino, talk to someone who is close to the person and more importantly. Ideally, that third party should be someone that that person respects. Be gentle in your approach to get the best results.
